Keystone XL pipeline

Written by: Sarah Freeman

The Keystone XL pipeline is made by a company called TransCanada. The pipeline is a way to connect oil from Canada to Texas. The Keystone pipeline is from Hardisty, Alberta to Steele City, Nebraska. The pipeline will cross the Cheyenne River near a reservation. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the Yankton Sioux tribe are trying to stop the XL pipeline. Many tribes that will be affected by this pipeline are protesting it as well. South dakota is were the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe resieds and have been protesting the pipeline. The pipeline is an envoirmental risk that can and will polute the land when the pipeline spills. Remi Bald Eale is the intergovernmental affairs coordinator for the Cheyenne River Tribe. His response to the pipeline is that he will support his people and will not let the workers of the pipeline go through the reservation at all.
Not just tribe in South Dakota are protesting and against the pipeline, the National Congress of American Indians or the NCAL is also against the Keystone XL pipeline. They are concerned for the environment as the pipeline will be holding around 830,000 barrels of oil. With spills of 42,000 gallon spills its no wonder that people don’t want this pipeline. South Dakota also has problems with covering the voices of the people. They put into place an act that will not allow a form of protest. The Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota people apart of the Oceti Sakowin or the Seven Council Fires are very much against the pipeline. With the new riot-boosting act in place to stop all forms of protest to punish others for trying to speak their mind. People are not going to stop trying to get this pipeline to not be made. Though the government is starting to make protestors out like terrorist and having major problems at Standing Rock protestors were teargassed and got water canons pointed on them. This has happened making others worried about what is to come for them.
This pipeline has been protested from the start. This pipeline is a environmental risk and will make problems. Espalily since the route for the pipeline is going through rivers important to tribal survival. These rivers are important to religious practices and their everyday life. Having that the pipeline has spilled and caused damages in the past everyone knows that the pipeline will cause more environmental issues and cause the rivers and land to become polluted. People are not going to stop until this pipeline has been stopped. From environmentalist to tribes that are affected by this pipeline are going to stop this project. I hope they do because this pipeline is terible. The spills that are connected to this company and their other pipelines are terrible the benefits of this pipeline are more for the rich and the company itself. The jobs are nonexistent and are more harmful to the US then a benefit. To have this pipeline is going to cause problems for the land and the water that it will spill into when it starts to leak. With all these tribes that are against it and are trying to stop it should indicate that we don't want or need this pipeline connecting Canada to the Gulf coast. With president Trump supporting this pipeline is a big problem. With the crack down on protesters and having Trump supporting the project is a problem. It is showing that the government cares more about oil then its people's health. What will happen when people get affected by this pipeline. The government will do nothing and it will be a problem. This pipeline is a problem and the government is supporting it. Our future of this world is changing with climate change and no one wants to change the world for the better.
In conclusion, this pipeline is not needed or wanted. The tribes of Lakota, Dakota, Nakota all agree that this is a terrible idea and don't want it in their rivers. The NCAI also agreeing that this pipeline is bad is another reason to get rid of it. This pipeline will cause problems for those in its path. It will spill and contaminate water supplies and pollute the land. With protest being silenced and the tribes coming together to be heard problems are arising. A protest is going to happen and the more radical people might stop at nothing to keep this pipeline from being made. With this problem on the rise, I am looking forward to hearing the outcome of this pipeline. I hope the voices of those how will be affected will get heard and people will see the truth of this pipeline. As the pipeline continues to grow and the people try to stop it we will see the truth of this world.
